The VDL is also involved in antiviral and viral vaccine development and testing, research, development, and implementation of diagnostic assays to detect enteroviruses, including poliovirus and EV-D68, and acute flaccid myelitis. The Vaccine Development Laboratory (VDL) performs clinical trial testing for novel oral polio vaccine (nOPV) clinical trials, which are critical for development and licensing of novel vaccine strains for outbreak response for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch (PPLB) has responsibility for supporting 1) the domestic polio vaccine program to maintain polio elimination in the United States, and 2) the Global Poliovirus Eradication Initiative (GPEI), which was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 with the aim of eradicating polio worldwide.
